Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 Review

Throughout the PC field, business laptops that keep up with the times and are innovative are rare, and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon can be said to be one of the outstanding representatives. Since the launch of the first generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon in 2012, ThinkPad X1 Carbon has become synonymous with high-end business laptops in the minds of many users. This year is even more significant for ThinkPad X1 Carbon because it is its tenth generation product. So what surprises does the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2022 bring to users?

When talking about ThinkPad X1 Carbon, we must talk about its outstanding design. The aerospace-grade carbon fiber body brings a premium feel while keeping the weight and strength of the laptop just right.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2022 uses a textured black color scheme. Compared with the immersive black color scheme, its “black” is lighter, which allows the carbon fiber design on the body to be seen more clearly and with a more textured and premium feel. The 1.12kg weight is basically the same as the previous generation (1.13kg), but it still stands out among 14-inch laptops.

The screen is designed with narrow bezels on all sides, 16:10, 2240*1400 resolution, HDR400 and Dolby Vision support, and the screen design is perfect. With a color gamut of 100% sRGB and a color accuracy of 1.32, it is a product with excellent screen quality.

The screen is also equipped with TV Rheinland’s hardware-level anti-blue light technology and is certified by Eyesafe to reduce harmful blue light and make the screen feel more natural.

On the top of the screen, ThinkShutter physical switch and IR camera face recognition (optional) are designed to enhance the user experience while protecting the user’s privacy and security. Equipped with FHD camera + 4 array microphones, it can make the video conference picture clearer and improve communication efficiency. In today’s uncertain environment, ThinkPad X1 Carbon’s excellent meeting features are undoubtedly a great tool for business people to stay productive.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon’s camera image quality and sound pickup capabilities are excellent as seen through actual conference testing. The picture quality is very clear and compares favorably with a cell phone camera (pictured right). It also provides a certain amount of fill light according to the environment, making the participants’ faces clearer. Of course, what I like more is the mobility that comes with the LTE network, and meeting in the lounge area downstairs in the community is just awesome!

At the same time, it is also designed with Computer Vision wise eye sensing to identify the user’s status and guard privacy and security. Through the neural network, intelligent recognition of the user’s state, people walk automatically lock the screen, open automatically recognize the face and unlock, so that security and portability can be shared. When no one is watching, the screen brightness is intelligently reduced to improve the battery life. When the living detection function is turned on, the screen will automatically pop up a warning when someone is detected behind it and blur the content being displayed.

The keyboard part is still the iconic TrackPoint small red cap with the classic three-key design, the keyboard key range is very deep, the experience is very comfortable. The keyboard is also designed with a spill-resistant design, avoiding damage to the body caused by coffee or water cups tipping. It is also a pneumatic keyboard, so that the C side into the air to assist in cooling, thus making the machine better performance.

The top right corner of the keyboard is designed with fingerprint recognition, which can be used to quickly open the work when face unlocking is not convenient (such as the need to wear a mask in public places).

It is equipped with two Thunderbolt 4 multi-functional interfaces, which can be used as external graphics docking stations to enhance the graphics processing performance of the machine, as well as external 4K monitors to enhance work efficiency. two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 high-speed data interfaces, compatible with mainstream devices, eliminating the hassle of transferring, such as hard drives/USB drives, etc. HDMI 2.0b video interface for one-line direct connection to a monitor or projector.

In Intel’s mobile twelfth generation Core processor family, in addition to the traditional H45 series and U15 series, there is a newly designed P28 series. From the official introduction, this is the processor designed for high-performance thin and light laptops. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2022 is equipped with this series of processors. The model we got is i7-1260P, which uses 10mn process (Intel 7), TDP of 28W, 12 cores (4P+8E) and 16 threads design.

We conducted a stress test on ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2022 through AIDA64’s Stress FPU. After 30 minutes, its power consumption was able to stay between 28-30W. Fan noise, unless very close to being able to hear some, normal use basically no sense.

At the same time, we also found that the CPU temperature performance is high at this time, about 96 degrees Celsius. Lenovo is said to need to update the BIOS to fix this.

After updating the BIOS, we re-tested the product and found that the CPU temperature remained at about 74 degrees and the power consumption was 20 W. From here, we can also see that the ThinkPad X1 Carbon can actually spell performance release, but not a brain of pure performance theory, but to take into account the actual needs of users. I think this is also the reason why ThinkPad X1 Carbon can be inherited for ten years and still be praised.

In terms of keyboard surface temperature, we took a thermal instrument to test, most of the common keyboard bit temperature is around 30 degrees, no feeling of normal use. This is due to its built-in dual-fan cooling system, with the new pneumatic keyboard to enhance the C-side air intake, taking into account the silent and efficient.

From the actual experience, ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2022 continues the classic design of the previous generations and has been improved in terms of performance, design and intelligence to meet the needs of business people in today’s hybrid office. As a classic that has lasted for a decade, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2022 does not disappoint its fans.
